The load isn’t the compromise people assume — we program most stations at 60-75% of a client’s estimated one-rep max, which is heavy enough to drive a genuine strength adaptation, not just a sweat.

What it isn’t: a random string of bodyweight movements strung together until you’re gassed. That’s conditioning, and it has its place, but it’s not circuit training in the sense we mean it. The difference matters because loaded circuits, done correctly, train two energy systems in the same session — the phosphagen and glycolytic systems from the resistance work, and the aerobic system from the density of the rest periods.

Who This Program Is For (and Who Should Do Something Else)

Circuit training is the right call for busy professionals who have 2-3 training windows a week and need each one to do double duty — strength stimulus and conditioning in a single block. It’s also effective for clients coming back from a long layoff who need to rebuild general work capacity before a more specialized block, and for anyone training for an event that demands both strength and stamina, like an obstacle race or a ski trip.

It’s the wrong tool if your primary goal is a specific one-rep max on a barbell lift. Circuits at 60-75% of 1RM won’t drive the neural adaptations needed to push a true max past 85-90% intensity — that requires dedicated heavy sets with full recovery between them, which a circuit format structurally doesn’t allow. Common Mistakes We See (and Fix)

The most common mistake is undertrained load selection. Clients — and sometimes less experienced coaches — default to light weights “because it’s a circuit,” which turns a strength-and-conditioning session into pure cardio.
