Most gyms start with a business plan. Self Made Training Facility started with a principle: the people who train hardest deserve an environment that matches their effort.
That principle came from the military — specifically, from years of U.S. Navy service where discipline wasn’t optional, standards weren’t negotiable, and the environment you trained in directly shaped the quality of your output.
Self Made Training Facility opened in San Diego’s Mission Bay neighborhood in 2014. Not as a franchise. Not backed by investors. Built from scratch by a veteran who saw a gap between what serious trainers needed and what the fitness industry was selling them.
The Problem With How Gyms Work
The commercial gym model is designed around one thing: volume. Sign up as many members as possible, keep overhead low, and hope that 80% of the people paying monthly never actually show up.
That model works for the gym’s bank account. It doesn’t work for the people who actually train.
Overcrowded floors. Undertrained staff. Equipment selected for aesthetics instead of function. A culture that prioritizes Instagram content over actual performance. For anyone serious about training — whether they’re an athlete, a working professional, or a trainer building a career — the commercial gym experience is a compromise.
Self Made was built to eliminate that compromise.
What Military Service Teaches You About Training Environments
In the Navy, your environment isn’t an afterthought. It’s infrastructure. The space you operate in is maintained to standards because those standards directly affect performance and safety.
That same thinking drives how Self Made operates:
Equipment maintenance is non-negotiable. Every piece of equipment is maintained, organized, and built for performance — not for looking good on a virtual tour.
The space respects everyone in it. No blaring music drowning out focus. No staff pushing supplement sales. No culture of distraction. The facility exists to support the work, period.
Accountability is built into the culture. When you train at Self Made, you’re surrounded by people who hold themselves to a standard. That’s not something you can fake with motivational quotes on the wall — it’s something that develops when the environment demands it.
Structure creates freedom. A well-run facility means trainers can focus on their clients, athletes can focus on their programming, and nobody wastes time navigating chaos.
Why the Independent Trainer Model Matters
One of the earliest decisions in building Self Made was choosing the independent contractor model over hiring employee trainers.
At commercial gyms, trainers are employees. They’re told when to work, what to charge, and how to sell. They keep a fraction of the session rate — sometimes as little as 30% — and they have limited say in how they train their clients.
At Self Made, every trainer is an independent professional. They set their own rates, build their own brand, design their own programming, and keep the majority of what they earn. The facility provides the space, the equipment, and the professional environment. The trainers provide the expertise.
This model does two things. First, it attracts better trainers — professionals who are confident enough in their skills to run their own business. Second, it creates better outcomes for clients, because their trainer’s only incentive is results, not meeting a corporate sales quota.
Today, Self Made’s San Diego location supports over 30 independent trainers with specializations spanning strength and conditioning, boxing, corrective exercise, nutrition, athletic performance, and more.
8,000 Square Feet Built for One Purpose
Self Made’s Mission Bay facility isn’t trying to be everything to everyone. It’s 8,000 square feet of space designed specifically for private personal training and serious athletic development.
That means dedicated zones for different training modalities. It means equipment chosen by people who actually use it — competition racks, specialty bars, heavy dumbbells, turf, sleds, and functional training tools. It means wellness studios offering cold plunge, infrared sauna, and sports massage for recovery — because training hard without recovering smart is a losing equation.
It also means the absence of things that don’t serve the mission. No smoothie bar. No daycare. No pool. No rows of treadmills facing televisions. Every square foot is allocated to something that makes training better.
A Heroes Discount, Not a Marketing Gimmick
Self Made offers a Heroes Discount to active military, veterans, first responders, nurses, and teachers. Not as a promotional strategy — as a standing policy.
The people who serve their communities deserve access to the same professional training environment as everyone else, without the premium price tag creating a barrier. It’s that simple.
From One Location to Two
In June 2023, Self Made expanded with a second location in Del Mar — an 11,000+ square foot facility supporting 50+ independent trainers. Same model. Same standards. Larger footprint.
The Del Mar expansion wasn’t about chasing growth for growth’s sake. It was a response to demand. Trainers on the waitlist at San Diego needed a home. Clients in North County wanted the Self Made environment closer to where they lived and worked.
Two locations. Same veteran-owned discipline. Same commitment to the independent trainer model.
What Hasn’t Changed Since 2014
The equipment has been upgraded. The roster has grown. A second location has opened. But the core hasn’t changed:
Build a space that serious people are proud to train in. Give independent trainers the infrastructure to build real careers. Maintain standards that make the environment better for everyone who walks through the door.
That’s what military discipline looks like when you apply it to fitness. Not rigid. Not performative. Just a relentless commitment to doing things right.
Come see what veteran-owned discipline looks like in a training facility.
