We don’t push everyone toward a true 1RM. For clients managing a shoulder or lower back history, an AMRAP set at 80% of the prior max, converted to an estimated 1RM using standard rep-max charts, gets a comparably useful number without the added risk of a true max attempt under fatigue from a demanding quarter at work.
This phase also sets the baseline for the next block. The honest coaching conversation here matters more than any exercise selection: if someone’s sleep has averaged 5.5 hours for two weeks straight, no amount of clever programming compensates for that. Tracking Progress Without Obsessing Over It
Busy professionals tend toward two extremes: obsessive daily tracking that becomes its own source of stress, or no tracking at all beyond how a session felt. Neither serves the goal. We ask for three data points, checked every two weeks: working weight on the primary lift for that phase, RPE on the last set of that lift, and a simple 1-10 energy rating for the week.
This is enough to catch two things early — a stall in strength that might mean a load was set too aggressively, and a creeping RPE at the same weight that signals accumulating fatigue before it shows up as a missed rep or a nagging joint issue.
